A recent City report outlines 2011 statistics for downtown Oshawa are nothing but positive. According to the report commercial vacancy rates have dropped to 11% in 2011 which is down from 21% in 2006 and an even more impressive improvement since 1996 when the commercial vacancy rate was 30% in downtown Oshawa. 5,600 people work downtown Oshawa and there are about 2,000 students who are taking classes at UOIT’s two downtown faculties which has increased food traffic in the downtown area.
A couple of years ago when you walked downtown you could choose from 38 places to eat and drink but today there are now 55 places to choose from. Some of the new places include, Great Canadian Popcorn Company, King Street burger joint, the Patty Shack, cupcake shop Mad Café, Jimmy Guaco’s, 7 different pubs, 4 Organic Coffee Shops, 3 restaurants featuring Thai food and 4 serving Mexican food.
