Winter Driving & Survival Tips!

With winter just around the corner here are some good tips for motorists who are venturing out on those cold winter days.

Survival Tips

• Make sure your cell phone is charged and working
• Dress for the conditions even though you will be in your car
• Have a survival kit in your car which should include; a shovel, blanket, winter boots, clothes, booster cables, flashlight, high-energy foods (chocolate, juice, granola bars, bottled water), road flares or warning lights, tow rope or chain, Gas line antifreeze, matches and a candle
• Make sure you have an ice scraper and snow brush in your car
• Ensure your vehicle is mechanically safe and everything is working properly

Driving Tips

• Be Alert – pay attention to other vehicles around you
• Leave Early – leaving early and driving at a safe speed to match weather conditions will help you arrive at your destination
• Clear off all snow and ice from all windows and mirrors on your vehicle
• Put winter tires on your vehicle and check your air pressure as the pressure decreases in the cold
• Top up your windshield fluid
• Keep your fuel tank at least half full
• Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead of you so you can stop safely
• Never pass a snowplow, they are there to do a job which means they need to travel slower than regular traffic to do their job correctly
